Healthcare Communication
Healthcare communication refers to all levels of communication within
the healthcare system. This includes the communication by and
between:
- members of the healthcare system (physicians to physicians,
physicians to nurses, healthcare administration to staff, etc.)
- healthcare providers and their patients and the patient’s family
- the healthcare system's strategic partners (malpractice liability
insurance providers, vendors, etc)
- the local community and the media
Communication is examined from the context of the substance of
messages, relationship among communicators, credibility of
communicators and approaches to resolving conflict.
Understanding, assessing and diagnosing communication within the
health care system can provide a concrete link to organizational
results such as commitment to the organization, job satisfaction,
productivity, effectiveness of implementing a change and ultimately
financial stability.
Healthcare also has another fundamental communication dimension –
the patient. From this dimension, health care communication will be
evaluated from a risk management, patient safety, quality of care, and
patient compliance perspective and then measured against outcome
goals and benchmarks.
